Title: The Jewel (The lone city #1)
Author: Amy Ewing
Publisher: Harper teen
Genre: Young Adult
The Jewel means wealth. The Jewel means beauty. The Jewel means royalty. But for girls like Violet, the Jewel means servitude. Not just any kind of servitude. Violet, born and raised in the Marsh, has been trained as a surrogate for the royalty—because in the Jewel the only thing more important than opulence is offspring. Purchased at the surrogacy auction by the Duchess of the Lake and greeted with a slap to the face, Violet (now known only as #197) quickly learns of the brutal truths that lie beneath the Jewel’s glittering facade: the cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life.
Violet must accept the ugly realities of her existence… and try to stay alive. But then a forbidden romance erupts between Violet and a handsome gentleman hired as a companion to the Duchess’s petulant niece. Though his presence makes life in the Jewel a bit brighter, the consequences of their illicit relationship will cost them both more than they bargained for.as een boek waar ik vanaf de eerste keer dat ik het zag al benieuwd naar was.
This was a book that I’ve wanted to read from the first time I heard of it. Apparently it’s pretty famous, but I had actually never heard of it before it was published in dutch. The books really look like the books from The selection series, but even if the stories would have been similar I wouldn’t mind. I really liked The selection anyway.
But The Jewel doesn’t look like The selection at all, this series is about slaves. Violet it one of those slaves. It are people with special gifts, but I still don’t really understand what that means. That annoyed me very much, so I hope I will get to know some more about it in the other books. De girls are being sold at an action to the rich people can have children. Which is absolutely horrible. They get a painful eductation for years so they can just ben sold.
I read through the story really fast. In about 2 or 3 hours I had finished it. I was an innovative story, because I’ve never read about slaves before – besides in a history book – and especially not slaves in the future. The only thing that wasn’t realy good was that the story wasn’t very exciting, but maybe because it was an intro for the rest of the series.
I’m really looking forward for the next books in this series and I really hope that the other will be translated and published very soon. Maybe it will be a bit more exciting, but if it wouldn’t it’s fine by me. In that case it’s more a nice story to read inbetween the other books.
